“Do you have enough energy for one more stop?”I asked Adi who had already made a few stops with me, just a few hours after having four teeth pulled earlier that morning. She nodded.
I pulled into Treeland, a small lawn and flower shop in town, the mission-to obtain a gift card.
As we stepped out of the car, a man got out of a car in the spot next to us. “Do you know where Town Fair Tire is?” he asked. I pulled out my phone to double check before giving him directions, not wanting to steer him in the wrong direction. I pointed him in the right direction and I headed into the shop.
When I told the woman what we were there for she said, “Oh! That’s great. We have to turn on the computer. We do it real nice. It will take about ten minutes.”
I looked at Adi who rolled her eyes at me. While we waited, Adi and I kept quietly joking, “we just have to turn the computer on.”
About ten minutes later, right on time, Adi and I were walking back to our car. Another older gentleman approached us. “Excuse me. Can you just tell me where Hawley Lane is…”
After giving this man directions, Adi and I walked to the car. “That was weird,” I remarked. Two people asking for directions in the same parking lot. “Don’t they have phones or gps?”
As I drove away, I couldn’t help feeling like I had stepped back in time…and I didn’t hate it.
Where In the World am I Writing From: I’m writing from my phone at the Genius Bar at the Apple Store…my computer won’t charge. Kind of a problem mid March…

Oh no! Your computer won’t charge?! I hope it’s easy and quick to fix. Maybe it got ideas from the direction-seeking gps-less people in the parking lot – or the woman who turned in her computer 😂

No phone, no gps more human interaction, eye contact, conversation, connection of course you didn’t mind! Glad you and Adi were there to guide!

It does seem like you’re getting some sort of message here! Also, my computer won’t hold a charge, so I can’t take it from home or even anywhere else in the house for too long. I suppose I should make an appointment at Apple to look into that, but that feels like a lot…could be a slice though?

Now that you say it – It really is rare for people to ask directions anymore. And it is kind of nice. At least you get to interact with a few people and be helpful. I’m kind of concerned about your computer situation. Maybe another slice? If the computer charges.

In early March when I couldn’t find my laptop, I contemplated Slicing on my phone and thought “no way”. Your slice shows what a tech savvy person you are and also what a kind helpful person because apparently in your neighborhood, not all people are as techie as you!! Fun glimpse into you doing errands!

I’d actually be a little freaked if someone asked me for directions these days — what’s the ulterior motive?? Sad we’ve gotten there… and I hope your computer gets fixed!

I won’t lie. I was a bit suspicious and did check my surroundings! Thankfully it appeared to be harmless.

I have had people ask me, usually older, but two in a day going the same place is odd!

That was strange but glad you could help out! Hope your computer is fixed.

Treeland and Hawley Lane and Town Fair Tire. I feel like I can picture where you were. It’s kind of amazing how infrequently we have to ask for directions these days, but I have had several airport situations where the gps says, “You have arrived,” and I’m looking around the JFK mazefield wondering exactly where I have arrived to. I feel like saying, “Nope. I have definitely not arrived, and you really have no idea where I am, do you?” So, there’s that.
