Melanie I were supposed to record a Two Writing Teachers podcast last Sunday. She texted a few days before to see if we could push it to this past weekend. I penciled it in in my paper calendar that hangs in the kitchen. I saw it several times this week.
Yet, I went to bed last night thinking, “I have nothing on the calendar for tomorrow. How rare!”
I was lazily reading slices in bed this morning when Melanie texted. I immediately knew I had messed up!

Luckily, Melanie was also running late. At 8:08, she asked if we could make 8:30 work. After saying yes, I quickly made a game plan. First, make coffee. I threw in a load of laundry and began thinking about where in the world I could record a podcast from, avoiding the noise of my family.
I decided the sunporch, with a closed door, was probably the safest bet. I grabbed my computer that had been giving me trouble charging the day before…it was completely dead. I texted Melanie, “can we do this from my phone?” She didn’t see why not. She also notes that all these glitches could make for a slice of life…
I grabbed a notebook and a pen and made my way to the sunporch, only to run right back out to grab a coat and my winter hat. Our sunporch is not heated and the spring like temps that teased us just a week ago were long gone.
When Melanie popped onto my screen, she laughed at my winter getup. But forty minutes later, when we finished recording, I joked that I was all warmed up after talking about literacy…my favorite thing! Despite the need for a reminder, the computer problems, and the location- it was fun waking up to chat with Melanie!
Where in the World am I Writing From: Still waiting at the Apple Genius Bar…why not slice?!? Tomorrow, I just might be slicing from a brand new laptop. 🙃

Glad you got it done! Has this gone live yet? I’d love to listen.

Ha! I think I should write a sibling-slice! I read the first line, and I knew where it was heading. Too bad I didn’t screenshot a picture of you all bundled up!

Heh, perfect moments to capture in a slice. “Our sunporch is not heated and the spring like temps that teased us just a week ago were long gone.” I really could see your thought process, it feels to me as a reader that you took me through your entire process. Glad you were able to make it happen!

I can’t wait to hear the shivering person on the podcast. You talk fairly fast at regular temperatures. I’m guessing you got a lot of words in very quickly from that frozen porch. Hope you’ve gotten your new laptop!
