“This is the easy part,” she said

“Do I go this way?” I asked Wren as I contemplated which veer to take on our way to a ballet competition in Queens, New York.

Wren barely registered I was talking to her. She was applying eyelashes and ruby red lipstick, in order to be stage ready. “This is the easy part,” she assured me as I started to break a sweat from the nerves that always find me when navigating an unfamiliar place.

“Easy for you to say,” I thought to myself. But for the rest of the ride, I thought about her words.

Car ride makeup application.

In less than two hours time, Wren would be standing on an unfamiliar stage, performing in front of an unfamiliar crowd. She was performing for judges who would critique and judge her groups’ dance.

I’d just be sitting, observing. That was the easy part.

Perspective.

An illegal photo I snapped from my seat in the audience.
A watermarked photo that is ridiculously overpriced, but shows my girl in all her glory.

Where in the world am I writing from?!? (Thank you Peter for this much snazzier title!) Once again, on my phone in a hotel room. I texted myself the title right after Wren and I reached our first destination for the day…so I didn’t forget!

  1. The cool, calm daughter….mother feeling not quite so nonchalaunt. While reading I felt mother’s pride along with anxiety during their day together…this recital adventure. When you provide opportunities for growth and new experiences for someone you love it comes with so much emotion! Take a bow, #Bravo

  3. My perspective is still that you have “little” kids! In my mind, everyone else’s kids freeze in aging. How can Wren be so grown up! Love this!

  4. This threw me right back to the days of dance competitions. I’ve gotta say, her lashes are looking a lot better than mine (a scaredy cat of the water line) ever did. Seems like she crushed it!!

  5. I love the two perspectives! As moms, we sometimes feel like everything is crashing down. Love that she was able to say it’s all good Mom! I also love the illegal photos haha I remember those days!

  6. I love the phrase “I contemplated which veer to take”–that captures the struggle of navigating an unfamiliar city so perfectly for me. I also love the contrast in the long paragraphs describing what Wren was doing/going to do and the brief paragraphs about what was “easy”. (As well as the play on “this is the easy part” and “easy for you to say”). I hope she had fun dancing! She and her group did look beautiful on stage!
