Good Human

This past weekend, my girls had their first dance competition of the season. I spent nearly twenty two hours in a dark theater watching performance after performance. This is Wren’s fourth competitive dance season and I know what goes into each of those performances.

Dance competitions are a crazy thing. I spent a lot of time wondering what we were actually doing there. So many hours and for what?!? But then my girl would dance, and the way she lit up on stage, I knew she was having the time of her life.

Throughout the weekend, a few other moms from our studio starting stopping me to tell me something kind Wren had done. “She just gave Reese a big pep talk.” Or “she really helped Elyse out.” And, “she just talked to ME and you’re raising a good human.”

Most of Wren’s dances happened Sunday and the awards sections were postponed due to a blizzard hurling towards our state. However, we left the theater Sunday afternoon with all the rewards necessary. Most days I tell my kids, usually in exasperation, “I’m just doing my best!” Most days, I believe I’m raising good kids but there are definitely days I question whether my best is good enough. I’m grateful for those other moms who stopped to share their stories of positive moments with Wren.

  1. All those hours of practice, performance and the support that goes into making those happen, shine through in this glimpse you offer. Sometimes it’s the outside observers who help us see our efforts in a warmer, friendlier light.

  2. Being a mother…..a legacy that offers eternal blessings! I am happy for all who gather around and are nurtured by your care and love. “Good Human” is the perfect title, thank you.
