A self care moment, the launch to today’s grad class, was an opportunity to reflect on those who have supported you. As each member of my cohort shared, a common theme emerged. Almost everyone talked about the support they have felt from their partners as they have embarked on another grad school journey.
When I first broached the idea of going back to school, Arnauld had, without hesitation, said that he could handle whatever came up on the home front. When I listed all of the things that would likely fall on the Saturdays I had class- soccer games, basketball practices, dance classes, competitions, groceries, laundry…Maybe I tried to make it feel overwhelming, to excuse myself from this tug I felt back to learn more.
Arnauld has more than managed all of the things that have fallen on Saturdays and all the days in between. Today, I arrived at Wren’s dance competition right at the moment where she got to stand on stage, representing her team, to accept an award for top score in their category. I had missed all of the numbers- the costume changes, the makeup application, the hugs, and her eyes finding mine while on stage.
But there were no beats skipped because Arnauld was there to pick up all the pieces, cheering our girl on.
Last year, Arnauld spent over twelve hours of his 40th birthday at the girls’ dance recital. We ate a packed dinner out of a cooler in the parking lot between shows. His birthday is in June and will land right around the end of my graduate program. I think he has earned a big 41st birthday bash. For today, I’ll make sure I say thank you. We couldn’t do it without you.

You’re a great team, supporting each other to achieve. Your last two sentences are a great tribute to Arnauld.

Congratulations to all of you for taking on the challenge of your graduate studies and all the consequences (and benefits!) that flow from that decision. Arnauld sounds like the ideal accomplice on your shared path.

High fives to Arnauld, and to Wren, as well! And also to you because sometimes it takes more work than any of it to get all the parts and players in order for the show to go on without you!

What a lovely tribute to your husband! They say it takes a village, here it took a supportive partner. Congratulations to all of you!

The value of a caring and supportive partner cannot be overstated. It brings my heart joy to see young husbands doing the things my generation expected women to do. It takes a team as well as a village.

Yes to having a partner who says yes to the Saturdays & all the days in between, who supports your dreams and your kids and… well, yes to having a partner like Arnauld. Isn’t it kind of a miracle to have someone like that in your life?
