A Good Problem To Have

I recognized this Slice as it was unfolding before me today. I was so sure this moment would be Slice-Worthy that I opened up WordPress, typed a title, and began jotting an outline that I’m now filling in with the details…

Dawn popped her head in my office at the end of the day. She held up four fingers and said, “Now we have four”

I knew what she was talking about. Our school wide invitation to write during the month of March is in motion. The once blank calendar that Dawn carefully drew, awaiting storytellers, now has a name in every box. This has not stopped the writers from writing. Our assistant principal, a first time writer just emailed us his third Slice today along with three additional slices from colleagues who never added their name to the calendar. That means that there will be several days this month where we share more than one story a day.

As Dawn stepped into the room, I explained the meaning of the four to Lisa, the math coach I share a space with. Lisa, who shared a slice last year said, “I’ll write if someone gives me an idea.”

I’ve got this, I thought to myself (this was also about the time that I realized that this was going to be a Sliceable moment). I scanned my brain quickly for a moment Lisa had shared recently or something that had happened while we were together.

“I know!” I said. “You can write about that video your daughter shared with you this week, about her audition.”

Her face lit up and the pride I had witnessed the day before as she recounted the story. She pulled out her phone as Dawn stepped in to see the video and hear the story about a successful audition Lisa’s daughter had recently had.

I jotted as Lisa shared and Dawn reacted.

“You have to write it now,” I said.

“You just did the oral rehearsal,” Dawn said.

I’m fairly certain, we now have five additional writers beyond what our calendar currently holds.

Each night, Dawn and I text each other. I’m in charge of getting our colleagues writing pieces up on our school blog. I share the link with Dawn and she writes a teaser to share with the staff. When Dawn left today, we made a tentative plan for how to handle all the additional writers. Juggling an abundance of writers is a good problem to have.

  1. Your words capture it perfectly! I knew the moment might be Lisa’s nudge, but, was unaware you were capturing one you(until you flashed your computer at us)! Love good problems!

  2. How extraordinary to have other staff in your building slicing and writing! It has made so much difference in my teaching practice to set aside time and space to live and practice as a writer. An abundance of writers is most definitely a good problem to have.

  3. I love this so much! I’m regretting as I read that it’s already the middle of March and I failed to do something like this in my school community this year. I’m tucking away your genius for next year for sure!
