Sneaky Slice Reading

Years ago now, I remember reading an article about encouraging kids to do sneaky reading. Sneaky reading is finding a few extra minutes here and there, like when you carry a book in your purse and read while waiting for an appointment or when picking kids up from activities. In school, it might look like kids carrying their books for those moments when they arrive early to music, or to fit a few minutes in when waiting for the bus.

I’ve read about other Slicers’ commenting routines. Some choose to read the three slicers ahead of them in the comment section, others have loyal blogs they follow. Seven days into the Slice of Life Challenge, I have discovered that I’m a sneaky slice reader.

Before getting out of bed in the morning, I find myself saying, “not before I read a few slices.” I work out before school in our basement and after finishing a workout, I let myself read one more slice before heading upstairs to fill lunchboxes and water bottles. I read many more than three slices a day, but each day varies, depending on how many I can sneak in!

*Today, I’m also a sneaky slice writer, pecking away on my phone as I wait for my daughters’ dance classes to end!

  1. Finding time to read and comment is such a challenge! I want to read everyone’s blog every day. My routine is to read a few that are posted at the same time as mine. Later in the day, I come back and visit specific posts and then I always try to hit at least one or two new posts. By the way, I like to think of you sneaky slice writing today, and wonder how many of us are doing that, unbeknownst to those around us!

  2. My comment seems to have disappeared (or never appeared) , so I’ll try again! The challenge of reading and commenting is so real! I wish I had more time to read everyone’s blogs. I tend to read a few who posted near the time I did. Later, I return and visit some specific blogs, and I always try to read one or two new-to-me slicers. I love the idea of sneaky slice writing! I wonder how many of us are engaged in that very activity, unbeknownst to those around us…

  3. THANK YOU for this idea! It’s been hard for me to get into the routine this time around. Looking forward to trying this (and telling my students about it so they start sneaky reading, too!)

  4. Yes! I am usually a sneaky slice reader, but today got away from me, so I’m trying on a new identity as a late-night slice reader. Tomorrow, I’m going back to my old sneaky ways.

  5. Yeah, this is great! I’m thinking about the idea of ‘habit stacking’ from Atomic Habits (and elsewhere) where we try to bundle positive habits together. I’m currently ‘taking care’ of my son (he’s reading in the corner) and also getting some comments in for SOL. Sneaky can be fun, too!

  6. I love the idea of sneaky Slice reading! I am such a creature of habit, but now am wondering when I can sneak a few more minutes (and Slices) in!

  7. I LOVE this image of a sneaky reader and a sneaky slicer. That is how to fit it in, but with such a delightful humorous tone, it makes our busy schedules just a part of the real goal of trying to get just 1 more slice in.

  8. Jess–I commented twice on this last night but have no idea where my comments went. I hoped they were just being moderated, but apparently not! At any rate, here’s hoping third time’s the charm—I find reading and commenting on all the slices so challenging. There’s simply not enough time to visit all of them that I’d like to. I tend to visit a few who post at the same time and then return later to visit some favorites and try to visit a few new-to-me every day. The time crunch is real though! Also, I love the idea of sneaky slice writing, and enjoy thinking about how many of us might be doing that (or at least mentally composing) unbeknownst to those surrounding us.

  9. What a cute slice about finding time to read other slices. 😉 I totally thought your slice was going to be about something else when I read your title. I thought you were going to say that you sneakily read slices, but never comment on them…haha

  10. I am deeply committed to Slice commenting, because it brings ME so much joy to get a comment, and really be able to tell that someone read my post. (Yes – the same thrill I bet students get when we read and comment on their work, seeing them as writers.) I have a commenting “flow” (and really appreciate Radutti’s nod to Atomic Habits, which has been in my TBR stack forever!), but I think I can sneak a few more comment “windows” into my day, inspired by you 🙂

  11. It’s fun to read about your strategy! I tend not to go back and forth between the site all day, but now I’m thinking it would probably work better for me–I always want to read more slices than I feel like I have time to. Thanks for sharing your practice!

  12. I love your sneaky slice reading technique! I’m always reading after I post … and, since I always post right before the clock strikes midnight, that leaves me reading slices when I should be falling asleep (or playing catch-up and reading two days later!). I’m going to try reading a few in the mornings! 🙂
