Irises

You planted the irises in my yard

transplanted from your own.

Packing to move

tears

not wanting to leave

your scattered gifts

the bits of you.

Dig them up

replant

hope for the best

You planted the irises in my yard

  1. There’s so much layered feeling in this piece, and it also reads well from end to beginning, like a reverso. I’m nurturing several plants in my garden that came from my father’s and they mean so much to me. You’ve crafted such a poignant poem.

  2. Such beauty! Oh, the flowers this time of the year are simply stunning. I, too, have gift irises from a former colleague who moved away from Georgia to Florida and then three years later moved back. The scattered pieces of life and the tears make me think that move was one of some desperation, of a brokenness, perhaps a divorce or job shift, but that’s the magic of poetry is the wonder and the fashioning of circumstance in the reader’s mind in the mirror of the soul. Love your repeating line and the symbolism of blooming even in the tough times, even in our own absence.
