“We’re learning about vowels,” Rose reported…in case we forgot since her last lesson. I’m not even sure who she was talking to. That’s normal for Rose. She’s always talking.
“Since y says /y/ and /e/ and /i/-we voted. Everyone except Nick thought we should add y to our vowel chart. So we did. Just so you know, y is sometimes a vowel. ..we voted.”
A pretty big decision for kindergarteners. I’m so glad she’s keeping us informed of these important changes. Now you know too. Y can be a vowel. Rose’s class decided.

Sounds like a pretty powerful class– love that y is a vowel, and I also love that Rose goes around talking to herself. I have one of those self-talkers.

This post makes my reading specialist heart smile! Such agency and meta cognition! Y as a vowel makes three sounds- short /i/, long e and long i. Can Rose come to my class and orchestrate a vote?
