A Lesson on Vowels

Saturday was a low key, but busy day. Weekends tend to be that way. When the evening finally rolled around, all the kids were watching a movie with Arnauld in the living room. I sat in our family room, cozy on the couch, catching up on reading slices.

Rose wondered in at one point, book in hand. Rose is always carrying a book and for the last few years, it’s usually a chapter book. Rose is in kindergarten and while she has been a “reader” for years, the world of reading the words on the page is just opening up for her.

She settled by my feet and started chatting. Rose is a talker.

“My teacher taught us about reading. She taught us about the vowel sounds. When you see a vowel, you have to try it both ways. You have to try both the vowel sounds. If you don’t, you might read a nonsense word.”

She then went right to work on the Piggie and Elephant book she had carried in with her.

I sat, trying to process her lesson on vowels, imagining how it is gone in the classroom and pretty proud of Rose’s approximation as she tried to teach me.

  1. Rose is a hoot. I picture her with a very serious face as she delivered this lesson to you. Was that new information for you, the part about trying it both ways? Did she say, “Off you go,” at the end?

  2. Every time Rose shares what she’s doing, you, we all get in a glimpse into her kindergarten classroom. It’s so fun, I admire Rose as the sponge who is soaking it all up, every word, every opportunity to try out it all out! Yay!

  3. Love it! And those books (and the pigeon books, of course) are our FAVORITES!! Mo Willems is THE BEST and a gem of a human being. I have a slice about my daughter reading The Pigeon Needs a Bath last year 🙂
