Proud Dance Mom

For years, Wren had asked to join the dance company. A dancer since the age of two, she wanted more. This year, we finally said yes. This meant a commitment on Wren’s part. Ten hours a week at the studio. A commitment from us too…and our village. All the drop-offs and pick-ups. I was never a dancer, so this dance world is all new to me. A few weeks ago, I learned to apply false eyelashes to my ten-year-old, never having worn them myself.

When Wren and her team were first learning their choreography way back in August, I was nervous for them. There were so many steps and they weren’t easy. How would they ever be able to perform these dances, nevermind compete against other dancers? Yet, the girls have shown up, week after week. I’ve now seen these dances practiced and performed countless times. The steps now engrained, the smallest details the focus of weekly rehearsals. The songs have been added to the soundtrack of our lives, all of my daughters singing and dancing to them regularly.

Last weekend, was Wren’s first competition. We showed up and were thrown right into the dance world. Costumes, makeup, music, and quick changes. We took it all in and anxiously waited to see our girl and her friends on stage.

I could watch her dance these same three dances over and over again. The smiles in these photos are real. The joy and confidence mesmerizing. I wonder how she got to be so brave and strong.

My heart fills with pride, watching her beam on stage.

  1. I’ve been reflecting a bit on how my kids know and do thngs I never knew or thoguht of. I think it is why this line of yours is sticking with me: A few weeks ago, I learned to apply false eyelashes to my ten-year-old, never having worn them myself.

Your slice shows so well what parenthood is. Supporting our kids, even when we never did it or get it. Go Dancers!!

  2. I was a dance mom for years, and there are many songs I listen to that I’m like yep, that was the ____ costume and the ____ dance. Your life will fill up with costumes. One thing I wish I did was cut squares from them all and make something of it. There are some I still can’t get rid of and are in the closet. Might need to write a slice about that.

    1. We have a whole closet full just from recitals. And a whole closet filling up already with this year’s costumes. They all dance…we have an extensive collection. But I hear the songs and can picture them on stage in costumes too.

  3. Welcome to the world of dance! My daughter didn’t compete often, but I certainly understand the costumes, hair, songs. hours at the studio and in dance venues, etc. It was a lot, but I did love it! I loved watching the kids take something to the stage after all of that practice. I also loved the adult friendships that were formed. Enjoy!

  4. Go Wren! We had many, many years of recitals (no competitions), but it was a very fun period of time, especially the Nutcrackers. I love that top photo. Very cool moment.

  5. You capture the reality of being a dance and being the Mom of a dancer. You have a unique lens as you were not a dancer. You have fresh eyes and admiration for all the dedication and work that Wren puts into dance! When they love it like she does, they can so much out of it! Sitting back and watching your child do what they love, and work at, is one of the gifts of motherhood – it can give your chills, make you tear up, and fill you with pride.

  6. I have taught plenty of young dancers (I worked at our arts magnet school for 8 years) but I don’t think I’ve ever heard the dance mom’s perspective before. I notice that when you say Wren is brave and strong you also show your pride & love. Go Wren!
