Invitation

I didn’t take a picture, but I wish I had.

We crossed the street after a impromptu walk through The Commons. The girls had spied a playground. I wanted to catch a glimpse of the newly unveiled sculpture, Embrace.

We crossed the street only to see a woman standing on the corner. She dug into a bag, set on the sidewalk, alongside a building. She dug in the bag and pulled out a scoop of what must have been birdseed. She gently scattered the feed on the sidewalk before digging in for more. An array of pigeons and smaller birds hurried to get their fill.

Just as we were about to pass the woman, a fresh flock of birds flew in and landed on the sidewalk.

“She’s inviting all the birds!” Adi exclaimed.

Oh to see a city with fresh eyes…through a child’s eyes.

  1. Your slice reminds me of how there is SO much to see. You thought it was a new scupture. And along the way, it was the kindness of a stranger. Both all about hands and giving. Thanks for allowing me to focus on kindness this morning. I hope I can do someting today “inviting all” as your daughter so wonderfully suggests!

  2. I was thinking about “Feed the Birds” in Mary Poppins, too. I love Adi’s way of seeing…kind of like the Banks kids. I with you on looking for a March theme, too. I always seem to have this fear that I’m not going to have any stories, and the flip side of that is that I always harbor some hope that I’m going to find a theme that will make the ideas just pop right out.

OMG. I love it! What a lovely way to look at the sprinkling of the birdseed. (I definitely would’ve thought, “She’s inviting the birds to poop everywhere.” Yes, I’m traumatized from earlier life events involving birds.)
May I use this SOL as one of the Be Inspired pieces during the March Challenge? Please email me — with the permalink — and let me know this week. THANKS!
