Back in the summer, I found entertainment, after many months at home, from the squirrels in our backyard. Those observations resulted in The Squirrel Chronicles. This morning, as we went through our lazy Sunday morning routine, a plump squirrel once again caught my eye in the backyard. This little guy was carrying what looked like an apple in his tiny mouth. He moved effortlessly up our swing-set, until he seemed to be safe from view or anyone who may want to steal away the treasure. After tucking the apple away, perhaps in a stash in the fort, the squirrel made his way down, back to a patch of grass where the snow had finally melted. He seemed to be sniffing around. Suddenly, his head popped back up and in his mouth was…a full size carrot? That must have been leftover from a one of the many snowmen the girls created during one of the many snowstorms this winter.
By this time, my entire family had gathered by our backdoor to watch the action. The squirrel, holding the carrot sideways, attempted to go up the slide, back to the fort. We all laughed as he slid back down. Then, that clever little squirrel raced around the swing set, to the ladder, which he must have known would be easier to get up to hide away this new bounty. I’m so glad we invested in a squirrel hotel in our backyard.
I took a few minutes to turn today’s squirrel adventure into another edition of The Squirrel Chronicles.

Random aside, but during distance learning last week we for some reason ended up on a squirrel kick – most of our slides were accentuated with random (but related) squirrel photos.
There are a lot of squirrel photos out there but I like your art better. 😉

Oh how wonderful, love your squirrel chronicle illustrations and how great a story is that to find a carrot in the snow…I love the antics of squirrels and the way they move, that slow, quick, jerky movement…

I love the drawings. The dreams of the squirrel…the patience…the payoff. I also really like the image of your family in front of the window watching Squirrelvision. My favorite line was “I’m so glad we invested in a squirrel hotel in our backyard.

Love the Squirrel Chronicles! We have many bird feeders, so we also have many clever squirrels. Loved your description of the squirrel trying to use the slide to take the carrot back to the fort. They are not only clever, squirrels are determined and seem to have the never-give-up attitude about things. Loved your drawings, too. A great way to start my day – thank you!

We have been busy watching squirrels in our backyard too! They drive the dog crazy too. Squirrels are so clever. One stole one of my ripe tomatoes last summer – minutes before I was going to go and harvest it! I love the idea of chroniling their adventures.

It was good for me to read this. The humor seeped through. I have a love/hate thing for the squirrels in my own backyard right now. They have hijacked every ” squirrel proof” bird feeder in my yard. 🙂 It has warmed the angry cockles of my heart.
