Chocolate Otis

About a month ago, my kids and I were discussing cake as we prepared to bake a birthday cake for my Dad. As we talked about our options, the girls naturally began sharing their favorite cake flavors and putting in early requests for their own birthdays. “I like vanilla. With vanilla frosting…and sprinkles,” Adi reported.

Wren got a dreamy look on her face and placed her hands over her heart as she declared chocolate mousse as her top pick. Rose, our youngest, quickly chimed in and said, “I love chocolate Otis.”

This was one of those moments where everything stopped…we have two dogs whose names are Moose and Otis. We all burst out laughing, Rose included, even though I was sure she had no idea what was so funny.

Last week, Rose and my husband ventured to the bakery to purchase a cake for my birthday. Before we cut into it, I asked, “what kind of cake is this?”

“Chocolate mousse!” Wren cried.

“Were they all out of chocolate Otis?” I asked.

Poor Rose may never live this one down.

Four cake loving ladies.

  1. Such sweetness..no pun intended here! These are the moments, words, phrases that become even more precious over time! Rose should open her own bakery someday and her specialty will the The Chocolate Otis.

  2. Oh! Now I love Chocolate Otis, too! You realize that you pretty much need to find a chocolate Otis cake recipe for your family – Rose really won’t ever live this down, but it will be worth it. (And, for the record, I’m carrot cake all the way.)

  3. Oh wow, chocolate Otis cake, it creates an adorable picture of how the cake might look! My kids never got beyond requesting just the flavour chocolate, coffee or vanilla at that age, so Rose has great imagination!

  5. This is such a darling story and I love that you memorialized it by writing it down. I can’t help but lament at all the amazing kid comments I’ve lost in the shuffle of the daily. Thank you for saving this gem, Jessica! Xx, Nawal

  6. The comments say it all. Chocolate Otis must be invented. It could even become a picture book.

Jess, I hope you take time and return to your posts over the years. You have captured so many moments of momming that would have slipped through the memory capillaries.

  7. I agree with Melanie, Jess. Cool picture book idea. Maybe everyone comes up with their own idea of what chocolate Otis is. Maybe this is a book about never forgetting how to be a little Rose. I love this snapshot.

  8. So cute. I am so glad you capture these saying. Recently I found a notebook where I had jotted down some of the funny things my kids said, but I wished I had collected more of them in this format- having the context makes it so much more meaningful,

  9. Thank goodness you wrote about this sweet memory. You will enjoy Chocolate Otis cake for years to come I hope. Chocolate Otis cake reminds me of my son’s favorite Hockey Puck cake which was the result of refusing to spend an outrageous amount on something “similar” at DQ. I tried, but fell a bit short. Literally! The cake was flat and once coated in melted chocolate it created a hard crunchy outer coating and looked like a giant hockey puck. It’s become a family tradition because despite its appearance it tastes amazing, especially with a big serving of ice cream.
