Bird Song

I awoke to the trill of a bird outside my bedroom window. At first I wasn’t sure if I was dreaming or was this real life? Slowly, reality settled. This bird was real and it’s song had woke me up…not my alarm.

I rolled over find Rose asleep to my left. Adi was also in the bed, awake and curled cocoon like in her fuzzy blanket.

I laid there, listening to the bird and mentally preparing for the day ahead.

The stillness of the moment was interrupted by Wren, now awake, and joining us. “Adi, come quick. I have to show you something.”

I knew she had also heard the bird, the window next to her bed directly above my own window.

They ran off together. Soon I heard their squealing overhead.

A few minutes later, only Wren returned. “Did you hear the bird too?” I asked.

“Yes!” She replied. “We saw it just standing under the tree going back and forth saying the same thing over and over. It was so annoying.”

I laughed to myself. I don’t know anyone else who ever does that.

Wren also wrote about this moment today.
Then we worked together to try and turn her story into a poem since her class is currently in a poetry unit of study.

  1. I love seeing the story and poem your girls wrote. Grandson R and I listened to a bird the other day when we were getting ready to pick up J from preschool. It was fun watching him listen. He’s just 11 months old. I love the lines:
    “Repeating Repeating
    like a little beat.”

  2. Your girls are so lucky to have you as their mom and their writing teacher! You can use Wren’s writing as mentor texts! We attempted slices yesterday and I was impressed. my kids are not quite ready to share, but hopefully soon.

  3. There is so much to this post. The waking up scene is just so comforting with the sound of the bird (not the alarm), and the girls curled up in your bed. And then the part where Wren finds the repetitive sound of the bird annoying was so funny, and had that beautiful honesty that kids have. And of course moving from the bird to some writing and then to some revision. All kids should grow up in your house!

  4. What a beautiful way to start my morning and to think a poem evolved from a tiny tweet. I awoke this morning to no bird calls and a dark day. These elements called me to write a poem about what I observed.

  5. “All I know is something like a bird within her sang,
All I know she sang a little while and then flew on,
Tell me all that you know, I’ll show you snow and rain.
If you hear that same sweet song again, will you know why?
Anyone who sings a tune so sweet is passin’ by,
Laugh in the sunshine, sing, cry in the dark, fly through the night.”

I just heard that song all throughout reading your slice. great little morning moment. thank you so much for sharing! adorable.

  6. How wonderful that Wren was inspired to write a story and then transformed it into a poem. “Tweet Tweet Tweet – little little feet.” Love it! I also thought it was so funny that she was annoyed with the bird. What a fun post to read today!
