Do you ever try out a sliceable idea in the moment? Like as you’re emptying the dishwasher think to yourself, maybe I can write about this and as you place the silverware into the appropriate places in the drawer you imagine how it might go… as I nestled each fork and spoon away…
This was exactly how I drafted this piece today…
Today, our third snow day in less than a week, I sat on the couch with Rose. Breakfast made and eaten. Wren and Adi were quiet in the playroom. Having just come off the weekend, things around the house were in pretty good order. So I just sat babbling back and forth with Rose, letting myself just be in the moment. “Nose, nose,nose,” I said as I tapped my nose and then Rose’s nose. This went on for a few minutes, each time her little face lit up- this learning words business was fun. “Where’s your nose?” I finally asked. Her little pointer went directly to the tip of her nose. “She did it!” I called to no one in particular. “She touched her nose!”
She’s clearly gifted.

I love this slice and can totally relate to slicing in the moment. In fact, that level of awareness is one of the things I love about the challenge– I love being primed to recognize the potential story in each moment in my life. Rise is adorable! Yes, writing in real time offers a sense of immediacy. It’s something I used to teach students, but I haven’t tried composing a slice in real time, that I remember anyway.

I love this slice is all about the power of words in real time, from the frame, to the nose, to the comment to no one in particular. I, too, have found myself “writing in real time”. Clearly gifted and absolutely adorable! Yet another snow day for us, too, in the Boston area. The more I slice, and write in general, the more I notice opportunities for writing. I don’t have to go looking for them as I did when I first began just over a year ago, I’m just more attune to them as you say.
