The last few weekends have been full of chaotic busyness, barely home, and just getting the bare essentials done around the house. This Saturday was different. There were no alarms, no call times, no expectations. The morning held a leisurely air that we haven’t experienced in what feels like forever.
After reading my fair share of slices, I was finally ready to tackle breakfast. “Can we make something?” Rose asked and then she requested chocolate chip pancakes. As I moved about the kitchen, gathering, measuring, and pouring, I took in the scene around me. I was the spectator, carefully observing and tucking away details to capture this moment, to savor this sliver of being home.
If I had my choice, weekend mornings would be quiet. My family has different ideas. Arnauld has a portable speaker that is usually spewing podcasts, rap music, or his “dad’s dance” playlist, a collection of songs he has accumulated from all the dance competitions he’s attended over the years. Today’s selection went back and forth between Kendrick Lamar and dance tracks. At any given moment, Arnauld, Wren, and Rose were singing along. Rose and Arnauld danced around the kitchen, while Wren sat perched on the kitchen counter sipping coffee. Adi, was a puddle on the couch, observing with a quiet smirk on her face telling me that, while she wasn’t ready to join in, she was enjoying the scene around her (although she’d never admit that!).
Eventually, Adi peeled herself off the couch, finding her silent basketball, and bounced in among her Dad and sisters, as they tried to emulate the moves from Wren’s solo dance as Regina Specktor’s voice floated in the air. Wren joined in to show them how it was done before they moved on to sampling other potential solo songs, already thinking about next season.
All the while, I mixed the pancake batter, flipped the pancakes, and wiped the counters, soaking in this slice of home.

Saturday mornings with no agenda are the best. I’m glad you were able to capture all these details and get them down in a slice!

What a moment to capture! The music & energy are clear, here, as are your family’s personalities. Quiet mornings will come; glad you’ll have this louder one to look back on.

As others have said, the quiet mornings will be your at some point, but in the mean time, the scene you’ve captured here is priceless. Question is, did you get a chance to clean??!!

This sounds like a perfect Saturday morning to me! I just love the craziness going on in the background while you are making pancakes and taking it all in. And come on, how sweet is it that Arnauld has a dad’s dance playlist!

Soak it in! And flip those pancakes! Love the details and how you wove in just the right amounts of their personal passions— and yours, too!

Soak it up is right. I wonder how much longer before there’s someone sleeping until noon. I guess it won’t happen as long as there’s dance and basketball…and the Dad’s dance mix.

You sure did take in the Saturday morning at home with all the detail in this slice. Sounds lovely (but I agree loud).

What a beautiful slice of a weekend morning. I love the details you included. Whenever it gets loud around here (a lot, depending on how many kids are home…) I remind myself of how much I’ll miss this noise. Like the shoes piled in the hall that I will also miss.
