Fairy Dust

“Deanna cried as she covered us in glitter,” Wren reported as we drove home from a holiday show a few months back, where her dance company had performed. “She’s always dreamed of putting fairy dust on her ballerinas.” I looked over at her, the glitter still glistening on her skin, her face lit up in a smile at the memory of the moment.

This dance season, Wren has had a new opportunity to be part of a ballet company, a new undertaking for her dance studio, and a dream of her teacher that is finally coming true. Through this experience, not only has Wren grown as a dancer, but she has also grown as a person. As a tween, she can often see the world through the lens of “me, me, me.” Being a part of this new company has allowed her to be part of something bigger than herself, part of someone else’s dream. This realization seems to fuel her in a new way, one I haven’t seen before.

Last weekend, as we drove to the very first ballet competition of the season, Wren talked about the dance they would be performing, Madeline. She shared how her teacher, Deanna, had been waiting for a group of dancers to perform this piece. “It’s been in her mind a long time.” There was pride in her voice. She is one of those dancers.

Wren and her ballet friends, ready to perform “Madeline.”

  1. I have a perfect image in my mind of a ballet teacher sprinkling students in glitter and crying. How exciting that Wren has found such a beautiful way to see herself as part of a team and part of someone else’s dream – all while getting to live her own dreams. Sigh – wonderful. And I bet Madeline was fun to dance!

  2. Dancing is SUCH a commitment and hard work. They may look like perfect Madelines, but that group of girls are athletes who understand their bodies, have a huge level of fitness, and are able to work together as an incredible team. Go Wren!

  3. Being a part of someone else’s dream…and part of a team. That does seem to take it off of ‘me’ . That’s a great gift. That also brings back some big memories. Sarah had a Madeline doll that actually stuck with her all the way through college. There may still be a fragment that is with her now. I’m guessing that the company stood in “two straight lines” at some point in the routine?

  4. I enjoyed your story from the fairy dust to Wren’s newest role, dancing in Madeline. How lucky to have a ballet dancer in your family which gives you the opportunity to see the ballets…I know you’re proud! 🙂
