Fortunately/Unfortunately

Fortunately, I didn’t have any big plans for the day.

Unfortunately, as the day unfolded, I kept imagining how this post would play out, mirroring a familiar children’s book called Fortunately by Remy Charlip.

Fortunately, my kids all woke up in relatelively happy moods. Wren was heading off to a week of intense dance training and I wasn’t sure how she would be feeling this morning. But she got up on her own, singing as she busily got ready.

Unfortunately, just before we were about to leave to drop her off, she appeared from upstairs with a worried look on her face. “What happened?” I asked. Her new bracelet, a gift she received over the weekend, had fallen down the drain.

Fortunately, my dad is very handy and always willing to come give us a hand. “I’ll call Poppy,” I said. Sure enough, my dad said he could retrieve the bracelet, and he would be over soon. It was so soon, in fact, that he was already at my house and under the sink by the time I got home from dropping Wren off at dance.

“I was able to get the bracalet,” he said. “It’s on the kitchen counter.”

The bracelet that started it all…

Unfortunately, that wasn’t the end of the story. While retrieving the bracelet, the trap on the bathroom faucet had broken.

Fortunately, my dad said we could get the part at Home Depot, just a few minutes away. We all drove down together, since we had no other plans for the day. We would spend a little time together while running this errand. We found the piece we needed easily and were back on our way toward fixing the sink.

Unfortunately, our house is old and when my dad went to connect the new piece to the existing pipes under our bathroom sink, the threads on the pipe were bare. My dad did some measuring and…

Furtunately, he said we just needed one more part from Home Depot. We were back in the car in no time.

Unfortunately, the new pipe we bought also led to a pipe that needed replacing. Back to Hope Depot we went.

Fortunately, my dad is very patient and handy because he was able to handle each obstacle thrown at him, while I stood nearby holding a flashlight.

Unfortunately, once we had purchased and replaced all of the plumbing pieces under the sink, we turned the water on, only to discover the pipes leaking in a few places.

Fortunately, my dad had this handy stuff called Teflon tape, which he used to seal up the joints.

Fortunately, when we turned the water on, nearly four hours after the story began and four trips to Hone Depot later, there was no leaking.

Today, I did not have any plans today and fortunately, I got to spend the morning with my dad.

  1. Fortunately, you had a great mentor text in mind. Unfortunately, you had the kind of day that lent itself to that text. Fortunately, you have the kind of father who helps you end an up and down day on a decidedly fortunate note. 💕

  2. Jessica,
We’ve been on this Home Depot roller coaster often, so I feel the ups and downs w/ you. Way to look on the bright side: getting to spend the day w/ your dad. Maybe that lost bracelet was a gift. Those leaks needed to be repaired. Also, this is an excellent compare-contrast mentor text.
