Mostly guessing

My cousin posted this earlier this week and for some reason, I keep coming back to it:

It’s been a hard parenting week and these words made me miss the simplicity of pointing to the moon. I wanted to rewind.

And then, my own kids brought me back. We were driving towards the dance studio, a place we go so often, I must have been on autopilot, lost in my own thoughts. I was pulled back to the present when Wren said, “I love looking at the clouds, especially when they look fake.”

My eyes went to the sky, just as Adi chimed in from the backseat. “Me too. Like that one, over there,” she exclaimed pointing in a different direction. Two girls, who spend most of their time bickering, spent the rest of the ride admiring the clouds.

Later, that same day, we bundled up for a walk outside, determined to get some fresh air. Again lost in thought, I snapped back when I heard Rose, up ahead on her bike, yell back to me, “Do you see the rainbow mom?”

Can you spot the rainbow?

All of those years pointing at the moon…the clouds…the rainbows. They were paying attention. I am mostly guessing at how to grow children…but I think they’re turning out pretty great.

  1. Amazing slice! Keep doing what you’re doing. They’re learning and noticing rainbows! My brother and I spent our childhood bickering and we are thick as thieves today. My husband’s siblings were close as kids and don’t get along as adults. I believe those sisters are working out all the kinks for a future of close kinship!

  2. Parenting is freakin’ hard. It’s a an endless journey where you never know what you’re trying to teach will stick. Clearly you’ve taught them to look up, keep going and believe. Yay you, yay A. Keep at it…a calmer, more peaceful week is coming. Oh..that rainbow❤️!
