No name.

Driving to work, I hit play on the audiobook I started weeks ago, but then had to return to the library before finishing. There were other patrons in line and waiting. I had about twenty minutes left of listening. Would I remember what had happened? As soon as I hit play, I remembered that I needed to call the school attendance line. Wren has a sore throat. I made the call, while merging onto the highway-my book on hold again.

After hanging up with the attendance line, I felt proud that I remembered to state my child’s grade and teacher. But…wait a minute. Had I stated her name? I replayed what I thought I said in my mind. I’m fairly confident that I said “My daughter in Ms. D’s sixth grade.” No name. I contemplated calling back. I called my husband instead. “If the school calls today wondering where Wren is, just tell them your wife is a ding dong and forgot to name the child who is absent today on the attendance line.”

This is the state of my brain and my life at the moment.

  1. But… did they call back? Because given the state of the messages I leave, I am pretty well convinced that the admin assistants at our schools are miracle workers who can figure out almost anything. That said, this whole post made me chuckle in recognition – from returning the nearly-complete audiobook to the forgetful call to making my husband deal with any potential fallout. Thanks for a relatable slice!

  2. Enjoy this upcoming break. Maybe include some time for completely uninterrupted book audio listening. (Could this be possible as a mom?!)

I can recommend 2 audio books I just listened to – Torrey Maldanado reads Hands and David Bowles’s book They Call Me Fregona. (I also recommend reading They Call Me Guero first as he wrote it first. Both are written in verse and quick and inspiring!)
