This week we are in Maine at my parents’ beach house. I’ve had my eyes and ears on the waves.
The first day, my girls and I walked the beach, careful to avoid all of the red seaweed coating the sand. “What are those wrinkles in the sand?” Adi asked.
We talked about the power of the ocean. “It brings something new every day.”

That night, as I settled the girls into their beds, Adi complained. “It’s so noisy. I can’t sleep.” I listened to the sound of the saves crashing to shore as I turned on a familiar meditation for the girls.
Sunday brought rain and a trip to the movies. In the evening, the rain was light enough to venture out for a walk. The waves were bigger than the day before and they beckoned the girls, at first ankle deep and eventually fully in, fully clothed.

The next day, the seaweed was gone but the tide was high. The girls delighted in jumping the waves, feeling them crash down around them, and even catching a few rides back to the shore.

This morning, the tide has made its way back out and we’re excited to see what the waves will bring to this day.

The best place to be! Your pictures help capture each days new scene too. Enjoy your trip!

Jessica, the photos are absolutely precious, and your post makes me think of the Robert McCloskey book One Morning in Maine, which was one of my childhood favorites, along with Make Way for Ducklings. You are making memories that will last a lifetime, and what a treasure of an idea – – wrinkles in the sand!

Jessica, there’s nothing on Earth like the ocean for wonder, contemplation, and the healing it imparts. You are so right – it brings something new every day. And oh, how your girls are growing! Happy vacationing!
