House Guest

Yesterday, as my husband headed back downstairs after carrying up a laundry basket, I heard him yell, “Snake!” I heard the sound of my daughters’ footsteps coming from their rooms to join him on the stairs. I emerged from the bathroom, where I had been scrubbing tile.

“You’re kidding…right?” I said as I peered over the railing in the direction everyone else was looking.

Arnauld went on to explain how he saw what he believed to be a garter snake slither along the front door into a nearby radiator. We did a little investigating around the house and the front yard where we had recently seen a left behind snake skin. No sign of snakes.

Fastforward to today. WhenI went to get the mail from the mailbox, I spotted two intertwined snakes laying below the mailbox, cozy in our flower beds. I ran inside to get my phone and my daughter, Wren followed behind. We stood, watching the snakes escape into what we now believe to be a tunnel behind our front step. Wren spent a lot of time out front today, trying to figure out the mystery of our recent house guests. Her paparazzi status left me wondering what the snakes must be thinking…

  1. Jessica,
That cartoon is fabulous! I’d be mortified if I were to see a snake in my house. What are you going to do if the snakes reappear? I’d call animal control and have them trap the snakes.

  2. My favorite part of your slice is comparing Wren to the paparazzi! Then you flip the POV in the cartoon so we can hear the snakes! So clever. My snake knowledge tells me that garter snakes are not harmful but I’d be just like your husband and be SCREAMING!! This is NOT the house guest I would ever want. hang in there.

  3. Those damn critters are attracted to you all! Agree with comments above (especially Sally’s). The two pane cartoon adds so much, giving those snakes a voice. Here’s to a critter free week.

  4. Yuck! You capture the moment well. Especially your surprise because who would expect this to happen?! Have twice had snakes in my house and it is super unsettling.

  5. UGH, Jess! I can totally relate.
Rats and cockaroaches are no better than snakes, but every time we had a snake in our backyard or our neighbors’ (back in Harrisburg), I freaked out and told Marc that I NEEDED to move back to Manhattan!

  6. Oh my goodness, that drawing made me laugh. I love that rather than reacting with fear, your whole family seems to be drawn to the snakes as something to be explored. Welcome to summer!
