Adi, Rose and I made a quick stop at Target on Saturday morning. As I quickly assessed the page count, layout, and feel of the various notebooks in the office supply aisle, in pursuit of something perfect to replace my almost full one, I half heard Adi and Rose say something about seeing Uncle Weethne. I didn’t think anything of it. Spotting Uncle Weethne is somewhat of a game. Any man with a beard and glasses is Uncle Weethne in their eyes. But Rose persisted, “it tastes like Uncle Weethne,” she exclaimed before Uncle Weethne did actually appear in the notebook aisle.
I recounted this story to my husband, later, when we got home. “We tasted Uncle Weethne at Target today.” I went on to explain Rose’s use of “tastes like” in place of “it looks like” or “that reminds me of.” A little two year old-ism that I’m not ready to correct yet. It still tastes just right.

It does taste right 🙂 My daughter tells us about what our two year granddaughter tells. Actually we think whatever our grandchildren do is wonderful 🙂

The sweetness of -isms and approximations are THE BEST! Kids are so free and playful with language as they figure it all out! Love that you explained to Arnauld the “right” way 😉

I love the evolution of the little girls as writers. Their literary language continues developing. You e capture this moment in its most expressive peak.

When we notice how playful language is (and celebrate it), it’s always a joy.

How can they say they never do anything fun? A trip to Target and an Uncle Weethne sighting?! This is a great -ism. I wish I had saved more. You’ll be glad you have these captured. I’ve always loved that my nephew thought the thing you answered at home was the hellophone.

isms are the best!! I love how this slice unfolded. As the reader, we knew and did not know at the same time. I love how you made the internal story the heart of it and the ending is just perfect. It is such a fleeting stage of language – one to hold dear for sure.

Great slice – playful and what a great use of language – perfect words in perfect places! The just-right length for a before-you-go-to-work read and one that leaves a smile on your face, too. Thank you! This blog post “tastes just right!”

Oh, I love the -isms. I think pretty much all of ours are gone & I wish I’d written down more. Hope you found a good notebook while the girls were finding Uncle Weethne.
