I leave my meeting at the high school and find myself walking down the long corridor amongst the high school students, in no real hurry, moving to their next class. As the crowds begin to clear, I am left with just a few stragglers. Something catches my eye out the window. Tiny bodies, moving on the playground in the middle of this big kid world. I am drawn closer to the window-a closer look. I stop to watch.
I spot her red jacket against the green grass muted by winter. I watch as she slips one of her striped gloved hands into her pocket and saunters towards some other kids on the hill. There is a slight bounce in her step and a half smile on her face. She is in her happy place, I can tell.
I get lost in the watching. I can’t take my eyes off of her red jacket and her unicorn hat, a reminder that this new spring air is still chilly.
I want to bang on the window, throw open the doors and run to her.
Instead, I steal one last look at my girl before heading back to work.

Love this description and sense of knowing and the sheer delight in knowing she is happy!

Red jacket and unicorn hat – impossible not to smile when seeing someone in them. I like when I have outside duty and the kids are bubbly with joy of play.

Yep– the urge to bang and run out the door yelling to our children is hard to quell! Probably good you didn’t!!! They get easier and easier to mortify. Isn’t it amazing how much we can love those people…

I love the way you are watching so carefully and then have this urge to bang on the glass and run to your girl, but you don’t….you hold back. This slice says so much about parenting. I really loved it!

I always wonder what it’s like to see your children while at work. You captured that feeling I imagine it would be like. How do you not run out to give her a hug?

The many sensory details you layer into this slice make it come alive. I can see her – red jacket, unicorn hat, striped glove – and that image helps me feel your pleasure. I, too, would have longed to run to her. Glad you were able to capture this moment.
