“Is today the first day of spring? It’s March 20th,” I said checking in with my four year old.
“I’ll check my calendar when we get to school,” she reassured me.
Once at school, Adi’s teacher informed us that the next day was the first FULL day of spring. Adi pointed to the construction paper flower marking the occasion on the calendar in their meeting area.
Nearly nine hours later, as we made our way back to the car together, after a long day, Adi shared the important news that spring would be here at dinner time.
“Let’s remember to say ‘happy spring’ when we’re eating tonight,” I said as I watched her face process this and a beautiful smile fill her face.
Later that evening, after Wren’s hip hop class, I proposed a special stop for ice cream- to celebrate the first day of spring. I’m sure my kids were confused, “mom offering ice cream at dinner time… and on a school night???”
“This will be so fun,” Wren exclaimed speaking for the crowd.
As we sat eating our ice cream, Adi asked if it was spring yet. I looked at my watch. 6:35. “It’s spring,” I said.
Without missing a beat, Adi threw her hands up in the air. “Happy spring!”

I great way to celebrate spring. We have a farm not far away that has ice cream. We stopped by but they weren’t open yet. There were cars there but no one waiting in line for ice cream.

There were several places around us giving out free cones. The lines were crazy. We went to a place with no lines and paid for our ice cream!

When I taught at a former school in a smaller community, the local Dairy Queen opened on the first day of spring. Families and teachers would gather after school for the first ice cream of the season.

This is much better than celebrating by having conferences. I may have to go for a first full day of spring (non-free) ice cream today. I love the image of Adi’s raised arms and shout. That’s the way spring should be welcomed.

Ice cream! Of course, the best celebration I can think of.
Our local water ice chain offers a free cone on the first day of spring. They know how to celebrate too!
How great of you to veer from the routine for this special occasion.

Happy Spring and ice cream for everyone! Perfect celebration! Also, how funny that Adi didn’t quite trust you & needed to check her calendar. That made me laugh.
