Rose wakes with us, another rough night of sleep only soothed by proximity…or taking up nearly the entire bed with her small body.
Despite her cries in the night, she wakes as usual, full of joy and life. Holding onto the headboard, she jumps excitedly. “Boys out?” she asks her first question of the day. But you won’t have to wait long for more.
She hurries to catch up to her dad, not wanting to miss the big event, letting the dogs out. She laughs with glee to get to be part of this job.
No sooner are the dogs outside and Rose is looking around the house. “Baby? Where’s baby?” She has found me, in the bathroom, and she needs help.
As soon as I remind her that she left her baby on the kitchen floor… all night, she is off to retrieve her.
And then she’s back. “Baba?” her voice rising perfectly on the second syllable. Of course her baby is hungry. We find the baby bottle and Rose helps let one dog back inside along the way. She knows this job is not done and she stands at the back door waiting. “Boys?”
When our second dog is safe inside she decides she can’t live without socks. I find a pair and stuff her chubby feet inside.
“Adi’s socks?” she says. Can’t get anything past her.
Done with her morning routines, Rose decides she’s also done with being the only child for the day.
“Girls up?” she asks going to the stairs to help wake her sisters.

You captured those first words & actions of the day perfectly. I felt like I was there letting the dogs out and watching her feed the baby doll alongside you.

Adorable. A sweet, energetic and joyful slice. It took me back a memory lane when my youngest was still little. Fourteen is big. And her sisters are adults already. Savor the time with your kids.

Yes, enjoy every moment, there was no internet or slicing when mine were that little and I’ve lost/forgotten so many moments. This is just precious and your daughter is a delight!

Rose is so responsible. The details share how much she cares, for the ‘boys’ and her sisters.
A beautiful memory for her in future.

You’ve absolutely caught those first minutes with a young child. I love Rose’s voice and her routine – and I love how the routine part of it is made so clear by your responses: you know what to expect and what she is after. Great little slice of your life.

It’s amazing how even with just a few words spoken, she (and you) express so much. She has jobs around the house, and she’s already a caregiver. I could picture this scene so clearly. I’m like Rose. My first job in the morning is “Boys out.”

I am doing this soon. I need to do this more often. When written up this way, the tiny pieces of our life become so beautiful and profound. That is because we are so happy to be alive and to have each other I think.
